The distinction that matters is not the camp. It is the water.

What it actually is

An inland delta. The Okavango river runs south-east out of the Angolan highlands, crosses the Caprivi and spreads across the Kalahari sands into a mosaic of channels, floodplains, palm islands and permanent lagoons — and never reaches the sea.

That geography is the whole of why the place works. Permanent water in the middle of a dry region concentrates wildlife, and the shifting flood remakes the map every year.

Water camps, land camps, and both

Water camps sit in the permanently flooded areas. Days are boat cruises, mokoro excursions and walking on islands. Game viewing is quieter and more intimate — sitatunga, red lechwe, extraordinary birdlife, hippo and crocodile at close range — and you will not see large herds of plains game.

Land camps sit on larger islands and drier ground, often on private concessions at the Delta’s edges. Days are game drives, and on concession land they can include night drives and off-road driving. This is where the leopard and lion viewing generally is.

Seasonal camps do both, and which one they do depends on the month. A camp described as offering mokoro trips may not be offering them when you arrive, and this is the commonest disappointment in Delta planning.

The question to ask

On my exact dates, what will the activities at this camp be?

It is a one-sentence answer and it is the single most useful thing to establish about any Delta camp. A brochure lists everything the camp can ever do; your week gets what the water level permits.

The flood, and why it is backwards

The flood does not arrive with Botswana’s rain. The water falls in Angola months earlier and takes that long to work its way down, so the Delta is fullest during Botswana’s dry, cool season — broadly the middle of the year.

So the best water months are also the best game months everywhere else in the country, and they are firmly peak. The shoulder either side carries a great deal of the benefit at a considerably lower rate.

Moremi, and why the land matters here too

Moremi Game Reserve occupies a substantial part of the Delta and is public land, with the usual statutory consequences: no off-road driving, no night driving, and no cap on vehicles at a sighting.

The private concessions around and within the Delta operate under leases instead, which is why off-road driving, night drives and walking appear on some Delta itineraries and not others. It is a tenure difference, not a camp-quality difference, and the price does not reliably tell you which you are getting.

What a good Delta stay looks like

• Three nights minimum, as everywhere — a Delta camp takes a day to make sense of.
• The activity mix confirmed for your dates, in writing, rather than inferred from a website.
• A mokoro morning if the water permits it; it is the thing people remember.
• A concession rather than the reserve, if night drives or off-road driving matter to you.
• A second camp of a different type, because two water camps in a row is one experience twice.

Honestly

The Delta is not the place for the largest number of animals in one view. What it is the place for is a landscape that exists nowhere else, water-based activity that no other safari region offers, and a quality of quiet that is genuinely rare.

People who come expecting East African plains density are occasionally surprised. People who come for what the Delta actually is are rarely disappointed.
