Two regions for eight nights, three for twelve
Every move in Botswana is a light aircraft leg, and each one costs the better part of a day. The arithmetic is unforgiving and it is the whole of the planning.

The arithmetic of moves
Almost everything in Botswana arrives by light aircraft, including a great deal of the food. A move between regions costs a morning at one end and an afternoon at the other, plus a repack into a soft bag.
Three nights per camp is therefore the minimum that makes sense, and two-night stays are how a ten-night Botswana trip becomes six usable days.
Baggage, because it catches people
Light aircraft here impose a weight limit — commonly in the region of 20kg per person including hand luggage — and require soft-sided bags, because the hold has no room for a rigid frame.
Camps do laundry daily, which is what makes it workable. Leave a hard case at your first hotel and pack for four days rather than fourteen.
Where Victoria Falls fits
At one end. It is close to the Chobe corner, it combines with Botswana more easily than anything else in the region, and two nights is right for most people.
It is not a safari and we would not sell it as one — it is a spectacular natural sight with a town attached, and it makes an excellent arrival or departure rather than a middle.
The shoulder-season argument
Botswana’s peak is firmly peak, because the flood and the dry season coincide. The months either side carry a great deal of the same benefit — decent water, concentrating game, thinner vehicle numbers — at rates that are meaningfully lower.
For a first Botswana trip on a real budget, moving the dates by three or four weeks is the single most effective change available, and it usually beats downgrading any camp.
